Lucy and Charlie were in the kitchen, making dinner together while Dylan did his homework on the breakfast bar.

“What are you working on today, sweetheart?” Lucy looked up with a smile from the potatoes she was peeling.

“Biology,” Dylan said. “All about how plants grow.”

“Well, that seems fitting.”

Dylan blushed and huddled closer over his book as if he was trying to disappear into the page.

Eddie walked in from the next room, where he had been watching cartoons. “Want a cookie,” he announced, holding out his hand.

“What you want and what you need are very different things,” Lucy said. “Besides, it won’t be long until dinner.”

“But I’m hungry.” A gleam of inspiration shone in Eddie’s eyes as he settled on a bright idea. Rules around when he could have cookies could be pretty strict, but his parents were also firm on not wanting him to use his abilities. “Too hungry to not change.”

He held out his hands and let his power into them. His fingers shimmered and tingled, then started to grow fur.

“Eddie Heron,” Lucy said sternly, “you stop that this moment. I know full well that your powers have nothing to do with how hungry you are.”

Disappointed that his ruse had failed, and now fearing the loss of future cookie privileges, Eddie let his hands return to their normal form.

There was a tap at the window, then a buzzing as mechanical fireflies swarmed in. They gathered around Lucy and hung glowing in the air.

“Looks like Ashley wants me in the treehouse,” she said.

“Most kids would come in to find you,” Charlie observed.

“Most kids don’t rebuild the microwave on their fifth birthday.”

“That kid is going to build a new world some day.”

“Then immediately take it over.”

“Nah, she'll be too busy working on the next invention. Now Dylan…”

“What?” Dylan looked up from his homework. “I’m not doing anything wrong!”

“I know, sweetheart.” Lucy ruffled his hair and kissed the top of his head. “Your dad’s only teasing. Now, I should go out and see what Ashley wants…”
